The Polar Bear Challenge - Your Ice Cold Fix.
Wild Swimming in East Greenland.
This is a new and exciting addition to my usual expedition
program.
It has been developed in direct response to a request from
a team of very serious and experienced UK based wild
swimmers. We have been in close consultation and have
now come up with a great initial package which can be further
developed for other interested pre existing teams in the future.
As a result I am delighted to be offering a wild swimming pilot trip this September in East Greenland, which we will be able to further fine tune for future adventurous swimmers in 2024.
The wildlife is amazing and during the summer months the weather is generally calm and settled.
Access into East Greenland is via Iceland, and after a short flight you arrive in the tiny settlement of Kulusuk.
As a general guide, accommodation is either full board in the local comfortable hotel or self catering at a number of nice locally owned guest houses in the region.
Locations are chosen so you can undertake your own unsupervised swimming on chosen days, while on others you will be transported in a warm boat to access the most amazing, remote and stunning swim sites its possible to imagine. The boat days are an adventure in their own right. They give you a fantastic opportunity to sight see, whale watch and perhaps briefly visit one of several tiny remote villages. Your local boat driver is qualified and extremely experienced, the transport is comfortable, reliable and licensed, it has all the necessary safety equipment.
Lunch and warm drinks are provided.
Access in and out of the water is by dive ladder. Swim shoes and gloves are recommended.
The local Greenlandic people are very welcoming. Life here to a large extent still depends on a level of subsistence hunting and is marked by the change in the seasons.
Towards the end of August and onward there is the added attraction / chance of seeing the
Northern Lights. Make sure you have a suitable camera.
This team will be staying in the Kulusuk hotel - they will be met from the flight and their bags taken for for them, should anyone wish to ride that's fine but if the weather is nice, its a great chance to start absorbing the great Greenlandic air.
Rooms are shared, with en suit shower and toilet, Breakfast and Evening meals are provided.
Lunch when not out with the boat will be arranged through the hotel.
There are day walks and things to see in Kulusuk when not on a boat tour and there are several great sites to swim close to the ice and just a short walk from the hotel.
I am very confident everyone will have an amazing experience.
